Sanctuary was a web based series made by people who worked on Stargate SG1 in their spare time. It was so popular online Sci-Fi channel bought the rights to it and are putting it on the TV with a big budget.
You might want to look at watching one more British SCI-Fi series if you get a chance. There is a show called "Primeval" which only has 13 hour long episodes out so far, and it's VERY good. Involves a team who investigates seemingly random time portals that start opening in England. The episodes usually involve chasing down various dinosaurs or whatever who slip through and sending them back, but there is also a good continuing plot.
